  • INVT make raw, adrenaline-fuelled blasters to turn up to. Since 2018, Miami-based Luca Medici and Delbert Perez (who produce as INVT in addition to running a label of the same name) have been winding waists with their wild shapes of deep techno, dubby jungle, rolling breaks and hypnotic Latin percussion. Their music works its way down your spine, starting with head nods to heavy doses of Miami bass and moving onto shoulder shimmies as the stepping rhythms come in. It's such an impressive composite sound that it's hard to separate it into individual elements—dramatic footwork, garage, early dubstep—as it mutates by the minute, though one constant is the heavy Latin influence. Medici hails from Uruguay, while Perez's family is Venezuelan, and the Latin American heritage shows across their mixes and productions, especially on their latest, MEDIA NOCHE, where cumbia and dembow make up the roots of a fluid, electrifying club sound. Media Noche is a collaborative LP with fellow Floridian Coffintexts that arrives just a few weeks after its predecessor, PRENDIDA, an INVT solo record. Both are beastly, though Prendida was loopy where Media Noche is sprawling and adventurous. "CUERPO," for example, starts as full-on techno, but around the halfway mark pounding syncopated notes appear, taking over on the next track, "ASANDO." INVT and Coffintexts keep up a consistent flow even as they power through different genres: the electro-inspired "ENSENDI" gives way to breakbeat techno on "HUMO" before moving onto gritty footwork with "FANTASTICA ." And the LP ends with its most intense track, "PURO LOCURA," with thrashing kicks and warped synths lending it a hardstyle flavour. It's like the trio drew out a basic roadmap of where they wanted to begin and end, and then connected the dots with pure instinct. The group prefer an open-ended approach over linear arrangements—like the way the syncopated snares and claps sometimes break or interrupt melodic leads—but their music never feels herky-jerky. By the same token, their music inhabits the upper range of the tempo spectrum, from 140 to 160 BPM, but hardly comes off as rushed or even particularly fast. INVT and Coffintexts balance the blistering pace of MEDIA NOCHE with experimental touches that create intrigue and curiosity for what might come next—a ghostly synth here, a glitched-out synth or vocal snippet there. These touches add a glazed, dazed gloss to what otherwise might come off as fiery compositions. This almost improvisatory approach to composition matches INVT's prolific output. On average, the duo put out one album every month, with two this April alone. This record is barely a month old and INVT are already promoting their next release, which is set to be another jolt of highly texturized club music that showcases their genre-bending ways already on display on MEDIA NOCHE.
