Boogzbrown - Jookali

  • Futuristic polyrhythms inspired by ancient traditions.

  • Hailing from Réunion Island, Boogzbrown walks the line between juke, traditional Maloya rhythms, dub and melodic techno. On this opening track from his debut EP, he channels the trance-like energy of musicians during a kabar (a celebration indigenous to Maloya culture) through unpredictable tempos, waves of layered percussion, sinister bass and warped bleeps. Instead of progressing towards any kind of climax, these elements riff off each other, seemingly responding to one another's frequencies much like players in a drum circle. "Jookali" may boast ancient influences, but its experimental antics and taut arrangement makes it its own entity entirely.
