- An emerging Chilean producer creates hypnotic, glistening grooves.
- Kamila Govorčin came into all of this music stuff later than most. Changing the course of her life, she ditched office work and started DJing at 29. Her first release, the Vibraciones EP on Chilean label Panal Records in 2016, came out only a year or so after she dipped into producing. Last year seemed to be Govorčin's most prolific yet. Just look at her SoundCloud page—a flurry of tracks, collaborations, solo EPs and even an album, Anima, on Clang Records. Sadly, it all went a little under the radar. In December she self-released this Pocas Palabras EP, a striking finisher showcasing Govorčin's budding, intricate musical touch.
Carefully layering elements, Govorčin creates a lot with a little. There’s devil in her detail. Often parsing together more visceral elements from genres like dubstep, techno or electro, her tracks still end up featherweight, and "abracadabra" is by far the lightest of them all. The gently bopping, slightly skippy drum pattern creates a gorgeous sense of space, as enchanting as the track title would suggest. What’s particularly interesting about Govorčin's music is the way she uses her voice. A simple vocal becomes the integral driver, adding a sense of momentum to her tracks.
She has a knack for creating playful but commanding atmospheres: the whiplash rhythms and droning currents of "eqing" feel inviting thanks to Govorčin's chants. The same goes for the punchy kicks and warm hi-hats of "advertencia de embalaje"—what could easily have been a military march instead becomes a 2-step freefall. On Pocas Palabras, Govorčin builds enrapturing worlds of sound, reshaping dance floor tropes with her own divine, distinctly feminine flair.
