Reptant - Phasic Reflex

  • Heavenly trance turns to nasty electro on one of Lou Karsh's best records yet.

  • If you asked me to define the modern sound of electro, I would point you to Reptant, the producer also known as Lou Karsh. His style encompasses all aspects of the electro resurgence: tracks built with spindly rhythms and a sense of spaciousness, hard-hitting basslines and a love of melody, a sensibility shared by many of his Australian peers. The title track from his new EP is one of his most sumptuous efforts yet. It starts off supple and warm like old trance, a fake-out followed by a hard slam into squelchy, acid-eaten electro for the final five minutes, like a reflexive reaction to all the prettiness before it. It's yin and yang in a track, a showcase for all the things he's good at in one eight-minute banger.
