  • Beautifully out-there beat experiments.

  • Eric Porter, the Oakland producer known as Afrikan Sciences, is a master of loose and fluid grooves. His records range from jazzy deep house on AYBEE's Deepblak Recordings (where he once held the title of "Rhythm Czar") to the beat sculptures of Circuitous, his 2014 album on PAN. Have It Tall, his first EP on the LA label ESP Institute, lands about halfway along that spectrum. The title track is a hectic bit of left-field house, all clackety drums and honking synths, not without a whiff of free jazz. The gem here is the B-Side, "Daily Gates," a ten-minute, 111 BPM cut where alien synths, upright bass and shimmering guitar form something that's part 3 Chairs, part Durutti Column, part Max Loderbauer and Ricardo Villalobos on ECM. With his crazy rate of output (he's put out three albums in the last 12 months), it can be hard to keep up with Afrikan Sciences, but as this record reminds us, it's worth it.
