  • groove, a series by the Polish label outlines, started in 2016 as a place for extended tracks (nine minutes or longer) from experimental footwork producers. Since then, it's evolved to include a more varied range of artists, including Kindohm and AGF. The latest, groove 11, comes from algorave luminary Renick Bell. It trades the bracing effect of Bell's past records for a dreamier style, seizing on the latent emotional impulse that lurks beneath his highly technical work. On "11.1," his complex beats are boiled down to a stagger that reminds me of Autechre's classic remix of "Skeng" by The Bug. Its more contemplative flipside tackles atmospheric IDM via algorave. As Bell's drums start to knock into each other, the effect is hypnotic, creating perceived patterns that may or may not be there.
