Wormfarm - Suboxone

  • A look at New Zealand's overlooked—but possibly bustling—electro scene.

  • The latest release from INDEX: Records is NZ Electro 2020, a six-track compilation highlighting the apparently busting electro scene of New Zealand. I hadn't heard of any of these producers before, but each has their own approach to the genre, from the clinical to the grimy. Wormfarm's "Suboxone" is the standout, partially because it's so far from electro orthodoxy. The dark, wobbling bassline and jet-engine roar is something I'd associate more with big-room drum & bass, while the weepy melody could've been from an old Explosions In The Sky album, written with the bold, soaring strokes of post-rock. It's the kind of tune that'd stop you in your tracks during a DJ set, strong enough to make you wonder if there's more electro from New Zealand to discover.
