Huerta - All Wild Things Are Shy

  • The dreamy first taste of a new album inspired by California and its landscapes.

  • Huerta's "Hey Fredo," released late last year, hit all the right notes. Upping his usual tempo, he added a touch of bounce without losing any of the foggy textures of his trademark sound. "All Wild Things Are Shy," the first taste of his upcoming album-length "ode to California and its landscapes," moves in a different direction. The xylophone-like melody and exhaling pads are winding and spacious, a feeling familiar to anyone who has driven Highway 1 north of Santa Barbara. Huerta has made music falling between the lounge and car stereo before. (The B1 on Lounge Lizard worked in this mode but was still functional enough for what Matt McDermott described as the "the long-form parties of his adopted home of Berlin.") "All Wild Things Are Shy" is primed for road trips, but it doesn't quite find that balance, suggesting that moving this far from the floor may be, like the California coastline, a bit rocky around the edges.
