- House, jungle and footwork bangers for the dance floor.
- After announcing the sixth volume of his Strictly 4 MY CDJZ series, Kush Jones suggested there was plenty more on the way. Coming from an essential purveyor of footwork and juke in the New York underground, this is good news for the city's scene. Strictly 4 MY CDJZ 6 is a straightforward EP, packed with high-tempo bangers for the dance floor. But most compelling is the release's range, which sends you through kinetic footwork, jungle and rushing Boo Williams-esque house.
Somewhere in this genre assortment sits "Spinz 808 Test," a spritely jungle weapon dreamt up to keep late-night clubbers on their feet. There are many jolting moments—listen for the way the acidic synths filter in and cut out, the roiling Amen breaks disrupted by sporadic drum fills and that single, reverbed piano chord. Underpinned by a classic dub bassline, Jones makes masterful use of space and percussion. The one instance of respite also lends the track its most captivating moment, where everything is stripped back. Within the stillness, the synth line we grew familiar with is suddenly reversed. Drawing from jungle, "Spinz 808 Test" is a resounding testament to the ways New York artists are adopting styles from across the pond, capturing the city's restless spirit in the process.
