  • Andrés is consistent. Over the past two decades, his productions have rarely deviated from his original formula of old-school jams in the spirit of '90s US funk, soul, disco and deep house. (Other aliases, like DJ Dez, are dedicated to genres that surface as influences in house material, like hip-hop.) While All U Gotta Do Is Listen, his latest release, delivers two more shuffling grooves in this familiar style, it doesn't feel nostalgic. It comes off more like "Andrés doing his thing," and his thing isn't influenced by the tides of taste or trend. Both tracks are swinging house rhythms equipped with walking basslines, Detroit strings and G-funk synths. Such well-worn references can easily come off overcooked or ham-fisted, but All U Gotta Do Is Listen remains relatively restrained. Rather than creating a big hook or lead (like the hummable melody on his 2012 hit "New 4 U"), Andrés lets live-feeling basslines lead both sides. It leaves the compositions feeling a little sparse, but on "All U Gotta Do Is Listen" he fills out that space with crowd noise. That crowd noise fades in and out on "Night Time Is The Right Time," allowing piano chords, singing and strings to command attention. That, along with its heavier drums, makes this track the standout.
