FUMU - Skinned

  • Mutant, twisted electronics that grind like stone on sandpaper.

  • In two short years, Andrew Lyster's Youth label has become a one-stop-shop for spiky electronics. One key artist is FUMU, AKA Michael Steel. HIs Skinned EP, which follows a 2018 album, features four untitled tracks of mutant dance music that explodes the second you press play. One comparison to Skinned could be Low Jack's dancehall fusions, but Steel's music is rougher, with drum that sound like stones on sandpaper. But the swing makes the music feel inviting despite its serrated edges, like on "Untitled 1." It also makes it hit even harder, like on the closing track, where snare drums land in rapid jabs like the punch of a veteran boxer. Best of all is "Untitled 2," a hellish miasma of redlined percussion and abstract noise, with a drum beat that slows to a crawl at the end, as if the batteries were running out.
