Mic Mills - Variety Boy

  • Rich, vivid deep house on a shapeshifting Melbourne label.

  • The Melbourne scene isn't dominated by any one sound, which means labels experiment with a range of styles and aesthetics. Ilio Records' second release, Variety Boy by the Adelaide producer Mic Mills, is a tasteful reflection of that mindset. Where the label's first EP touched on funk and boogie, Variety Boy is all about deep house. But while it's grounded in that style, the EP explores more percussive sounds ("Filipe"). There's even a soulful disco vocal sample on "Love (Dub)," adding an extra dimension to an EP full of atmospheric chords and dubby sub-bass. It makes this brand of deep house profoundly vidid.
