  • MssingNo's moment came in the early-to-mid '10s when the Tri Angle label was spearheading a scene of producers drawing on elements of grime, witch house and drag. (Evian Christ and oOoOO were some of the better-known names at the time.) MssingNo had his own clean, vocal-led take on the style, but he was always slow on releases. There was a well-timed EP on Goon Club Allstars in 2013, but by the time Fones came out on XL in 2016, his sound had aged. The new M2 Performance Enhancer tape follows the M1 Personal Trainer mixtape. It opens with euphoric build-ups and synth sweeps, after which a Mariah Carey acapella slides into Troye Sivan and Ariana Grande's "Dance To This" played over a bass and sine wave melody. Future's "Shotgun" overlays the pitched refrain of Christopher Williams' 1991 swingbeat hit "I'm Dreamin'," supported by a subtle rising tone. M2 represents a return to form that's in line with shifting trends, where experimental producers who first plundered pop, trap and bass, led by Evian Christ's Trance Party, have turned to hardcore. M2 exists somewhere between these two extremes, taking from both ends without overdoing it.
