- object blue is a London-based artist whose releases so far have made an interesting premise: what if the adventurous textures of experimental club music were paired with four-on-the-floor kick patterns? They come from different scenes and backgrounds, but it's roughly an approach she shares with an act like PTU, the Russian techno duo whose tracks thump as standard but consistently take risks. With FIGURE BESIDE ME, her third EP, object blue shows that the subtly daring streak she's shown so far extends to the fundamentals of her music: the EP features no straight kick patterns. It's an angle she's explored before, but among slightly more traditional tracks. She also said in a Facebook post that FIGURE BESIDE ME is the first time she'd made music about "life or emotions."
If that is the case, on "Ecstasy Of Saint Teresa" she seems to be responding to a state of flux. There's something choral and inviting about the voice and synth stabs, but alongside the jagged percussion and bass, the overall effect is unsettling. The glitchy processing and crystalline synths that emerge later might bring to mind artists like Arca or Amnesia Scanner, and while the same is true of "Fuck The Stasis," it's a different beast. At its centre sits one of those brass-like synth parts, favoured by plenty of experimental club producers, where it's difficult to tell if the mood is upbeat or something more complicated. Either way, object blue's execution, along with the slippery percussion and boxy kick drum, is pretty striking.
