- The title of The Lush Network from Dan Curtin could refer to the cluster of records he's released in the past six months. Like his recent releases for Only1 Music, PARTOUT, Blumoog Music and Bosconi Records, the EP speaks a classic Detroit techno language, overflowing with rich synthesis and funky drum machines. You missed all this because you haven't checked out Curtin in a while? That's OK. It's easy to take someone who's been consistently putting out music since 1992 for granted. This EP for Steffi's Dolly Dubs label shows he's still successfully mining techno's source for materials almost three decades in.
So consider checking out everything he's done of late, and know that this Dolly Dubs EP features some of the best tracks from this selection. The record is bookended by gorgeous electro-leaning cuts, and "Flight Lush" is especially nice—its pads and synths sound warmed by mid-summer sun. "The Fundamental Mind," meanwhile, explores a related mood in a more uptempo frame. "It's What You Wanted" might be a track for those feeling numbed by the dystopian techno themes of recent years, its percussion and good-times samples generating a carnival atmosphere. And then there's "Perfume And Cigarettes," rolling, late-night techno jam that will even evoke Detroit in the minds of people who haven't been there.
