- "Workaholic Paranoid Bitch" appeared towards the end of Working Class Woman, Marie Davidson's acclaimed 2018 album, and it felt like the manifestation of an emotional crisis. With a barrage of 16th-note drums and synths, it was the most explosive moment on a record that probed the frustrations and anxieties of Davidson's life as a touring artist. It's easy to imagine that Nina Kraviz, one of dance music's busiest DJs, who remixes the track, identified with Davidson's experience.
Kraviz goes to the trouble of recording a vocal, a possible response to—or act of solidarity towards—Working Class Woman's themes, although the robotisation of her voice is so heavy that it's difficult to pick out lyrics beyond "I'm a single woman and I like to work / I have zero interest in what you have to offer." The inclusion of a dub version seems to recognise how distinctive but divisive the vocal is, and just how banging the backing parts are. In fact, the almost 150-BPM throb might seem mindless if it weren't for the futuristic synth blasts (a Kraviz favourite) that add depth to the galloping bass and drums.
As an emerging artist, it's possible Afrodeutsche hasn't yet been buffeted by the weathers of touring, but the line "Living is not a lucrative job," from "Day Dreaming," the track she remixes, might have resonated. She shares Davidson's fondness for tweaking classic drum machine patterns, a technique she applies to her main remix (there's also a "Beat Free" version). The slow rhythm gives "Day Dreaming," originally a beatless track, a heavy, shuddering momentum that's complemented by Afrodeutsche's cut-up treatment of the vocals. The mood turns forlorn as the pads gather like storm clouds and Davidson says through the thick atmosphere: "No one will do it for you."
