  • Mahy and Nichel Cruz, the brothers behind Primary Perception, make the kind of intricate deep house that sums up the Slow Life style. After their impressive, breakbeat-laden Evidence Of A Primary Perception album from 2017, they adopted a more club-ready sound, without compromising on atmosphere, on Retrofitted Future Vol. 1. That sound is best enjoyed live. Their peak-time set at the latest Slow Life showcase in Berlin worked wonders on Hoppetosse's dim, smoky dance floor. Vol. 2 builds on the previous volume. On "Texhnolyze," high-tempo, skipping beats combine nicely with a massaging bassline. It's bouncy and exciting, but there's a subtle moodiness that also works outside the club. "When Gravity Falls" strikes a similar balance with its punchy bass and gentle chord progression. The broken "Cyber City Oedo" is the most memorable of the lot. It might be an "anthem," as one Discogs user suggested—albeit one delivered with classic Slow Life's restraint. This is fast and danceable music coated in a dreamy haze.
