Michael Mayer - See You

  • Uninspired techno for massive dance floors.

  • White noise, massive drops, blasts of atonal synth—these are just some of the tricks producers use to make their tunes big room-ready. Michael Mayer and his Kompakt label have released plenty of tracks designed to fuel massive raves, but the best avoided such clichés. The same can't be said of "See You," Mayer's latest peak-time bruiser on the Kompakt Extra sub-label. Over a placid hand drum loop—stereo panning is the only distinctive thing about it—we get a variety of familiar synth sounds. "See You" is the kind of track that only exists to keeps feet moving in some strobe-laden European warehouse, so devoid of character that it's hard to see why it needed to be released. From the slow-building intro to the predictable final breakdown into near-silence, this is by-the-numbers dance music that no one will remember the next day. That might be OK for Mayer, who founded Kompakt Extra as an avenue for dance floor-friendly music, but it's hard not to be perplexed by the lack of originality here.
