  • Volvox and John Barera both cut their teeth DJing and promoting in Boston before moving to New York, where they founded the label and party Jack Dept. Volvox eventually became an international DJ, while Barera remains an important booker in New York, bringing partygoers some of the world's best talent each week. Their label's releases, which have all been digital-only, usually focus on artists from the American underground, channeling the dark and sleazy energy of the club night's home base, Brooklyn's beloved Bossa Nova Civic Club. But the label's first vinyl release comes from the Japanese producer Hoshina Anniversary. The record sounds like something you'd hear while pounding the floor during a foggy Saturday night at Bossa, running between tough acid, electro and speedy techno. At nearly nine minutes long, "A Cid" is one to get lost inside, as a spooky voice spells out "A-C-I-D" amid a no-nonsense 303 and chomping cymbals. "Vuvu" follows with rolling synths and rising drums that take a floor-shaking left turn halfway through, while "Pimp" takes you to the finish with a bubbly electro workout. Released by two hardworking pals who know how to fill a dance floor, Jack Dept.'s first slab of wax will help power your next rave.
