  • Solomun hasn't released any original music in three years, and nor has he needed to. In that time, his steady rise has peaked. Currently one of the biggest DJs on the planet, he commands enormous crowds everywhere he goes and hosts one of Ibiza's most popular parties, Solomun + 1. But it was only right that the Diynamic boss is behind the label's 100th release. Customer Is King's lead track has the added significance of featuring on the hugely popular video game Grand Theft Auto, where Solomun appears alongside The Black Madonna, Dixon and Tale Of Us. You can imagine the cheers and hands in the air as it opens with an unhurried beat, suggesting that something more momentous is to follow. Plinking keys signal that change, but the track ends up being more atmospheric than climactic. In title, "Dre" is an unambiguous nod to West Coast G-funk. In reality, it's a less obvious homage to the genre than, say, Solomun's "Love Recycled 1," which sampled Michael McDonald's "I Keep Forgettin'" (most famously sampled by Warren G in "Regulate"). It's not in GTA, but popping percussion, crunching synths and bleeps keep "Dre" in the game's realm, too. "Ich Muss Los" ("I have to go," in German), is a shadier, eyes-down cut for early-morning dance floors, all rattle, hiss and pleasantly disorienting bass stabs. All tracks on Customer Is King will probably work well in a current Solomun set. But none feel like they'll get the same reaction in a few seasons' time.
