Yovav - Running EP

  • Leave it to Gerd Janson to turn a mellow tune into a dance floor bomb. Remixing Yovav's "Running Wave," it's as though he's flipped a switch. Taken from a 2016 compilation on Jennifer Cardini's Correspondant label, the original is an EBM-influenced, 110-BPM jam that sounds like something Lena Willikens might play, with mystical melodies and hollowed-out drums. Janson boosts the bass, bringing out a side of the track that wasn't there before. Cardini and Noura Labbani's Dischi Autunno label, which released this EP, may be meant for "home listening experiences," but Janson's edit is for the club. The rest of the EP slots in with the label's MO. "File's Detective" is the danciest track, but it's also goofy, with frisky percussion and a cartoonish descending melody. Yovav has a knack for lively drum patterns and well-placed fills, which are the best part of the all-too-brief "Space Work," putting an addictive rhythm underneath spaced-out kosmische synths. The kraut stylings resurface on "Railroad Track," which evokes the open plains and chugging trains of Kraftwerk's "Trans-Europe Express" with its title and easygoing melody. There's also a remix of "Space Work" that stretches the original to six minutes, but its acid techno inflections feel unnecessary. An extended version would have been enough.
