- It's tough to pin down Bergsonist's appeal. She makes versatile house and techno tracks with a lo-fi grain and a snappy groove, but that's true of many other producers. Maybe it's the small, idiosyncratic details in her work that draw the ear, and there are plenty on her latest EP, أ. The pliant chords on "Adorno" stretch until they eventually break apart like pin-rolled dough. Similar chords near "Bomb Silicone"'s end begin to pop and burst, as though suddenly loaded with data errors.
In spite of أ's unusual presentation—the EP, named after the first letter of the Arabic alphabet, comes with a pair of odd digital videos—its contents can sound familiar. "Aint No Deep House" won't be mistaken for, say, a '90s MK jam, but the organ riff faintly gestures to that lineage. You can hear the influence of Robert Hood and Jeff Mills on "Bomb Silicone," but only for a while. Once the chords drop out we're in house mode, with little more than a muggy bassline and a distortion-grazed organ for company. "Shift" is harder to place. The drum kit, which seems assembled from junk, clanks amid microtones and warping rave stabs. It's so rudimentary that it seems ready to fall apart, but Bergsonist's offbeat touch makes it stick.
