- Seeing 2814, the joint project of Dream Catalogue founder HKE and the American artist Telepath, on the Warp sub-label Arcola is a bit like seeing your teacher outside of school. The duo is so well-entrenched in the Dream Catalogue sphere of labels that it's like they exist in a separate universe to dance music. The music itself is even more surprising. 2814 deliver two lengthy dub techno tracks that draw from a powerful rhythmic force totally absent in their past work.
HKE and Telepath are talented producers who have been rapidly honing their sound. They make a smooth connection with dub techno, crafting some of the best work of their careers. Everything great about 2814—rich soundscapes of rain and mist, wistful refrains, a Zen-like aura—is here. "Pillar" initially sounds like business as usual, but the drums shift to form a 4/4 pattern, becoming rainforest techno that evokes the deep atmospherics of labels like Silent Season and echospace [detroit]. "New Sun" is stronger still, sending its subterranean kick drum through a gleaming gauntlet of dubbed-out melodies. This is an exceptional dub techno EP with a perfect harmony between atmosphere and rhythm.
