Yaleesa Hall - Zoe Hayley Laura

  • Buoyant and squelchy, Yaleesa Hall's brand of techno incites you to dance—without bullying you into doing so. Hall's debut album, Woodall, was a starkly different affair. There were a few dancey moments, but it was more an exercise in avant-garde engineering. Pushing a darker and more eclectic club sound, Zoe Hayley Laura is Hall's first solo outing on Will & Ink since. Releasing an electro track today without much prior affiliation with the style might seem like bandwagon jumping, but "Zoe Price" does electro the Yaleesa Hall way: bursting with squirrelly details. It boasts a melody that sounds like it's being whistled, which is a very jovial touch. The enormous bass drops are great, too. On "Hayley Roach" (with longtime label collaborator Malin) helicopter synth-swells apply waves of pressure, while sharp snares and a persistent kick effectively make the track one of the pair's meanest techno productions yet. "Laura Pomeroy" returns to that playful Yaleesa Hall sound with blooping bass, shunting breaks and burbling pads.
