Ninos Du Brasil - Animais Soar O Alarme

  • The title of Ninos Du Brasil's latest EP means "animals sound the alarm." If the A-side's adrenal charge is any measure, a subtitle might read "this is not a drill." The Italian duo's uncommon fusion of techno and batucada—the thunderous samba-style beat heard on '90s rave tracks like Capricorn's "20 Hz" and The Goodmen's "Give It Up (Batacuda Refrescante)"—moves as though it's galloping away from danger. But the panic of "Animais Soar O Alarme"'s seems warranted. Underneath dense, earth-splitting drums, misty tones give off a supernatural chill. The tribal chant seems to sense what's going on, too—you could be forgiven for mishearing what's said as "Oh, shit." Patrick Russell's remix favours space over weight. The original's piercing cries echo through the reverb-rich corridors of Russell's off-grid drums, which call to mind Livity Sound. You might imagine a bat—possibly the one on the cover of Ninos Du Brasil's recent album—navigating these crooked pathways. The bassline takes an unpredictable route through the maze, tip-toeing from one off-key sweet spot to the next, as if evading tripwires. Russell's remix is subtler than the A-side's trampling batucada rhythm, but it's no less deadly.
