Atom™ ‎- Future Nights

  • Even though he's often associated with experimental labels like Raster-Noton and Sähkö Recordings, Atom™ can churn out mean club bangers. The reissue of 1994's Milagro from his Atom Heart project was a reminder of his house credentials, while tracks from his recent techno-pop HD album have received plenty of DJ play. Future Nights, a new EP for The Bunker New York, find a balance between Atom™'s cheeky character and the needs of the dance floor, supplying three tunes that remain functional and sufficiently odd. "Chemistry" is the EP's most conventional track. It builds from a stuttered pulse into a sinister acid crawler, adding an off-beat kick drum that snaps into place before liftoff. When the clap, also initially offbeat, finally lands on time, you're just about ready to fly. The unexpected sci-fi synths two thirds through add a sentimental edge before they're stripped away for the bass-heavy final section. "Acid Sex Magic" has a sleazy 108-BPM beat to match its chopped moans, but despite the slow tempo only adventurous warm-up DJs will be game to play it. "Future Nights" has another snaking groove and vocoder-style vocals, which are paired with trance stabs that land somewhere between epic and annoying. These blurred lines are part of the appeal of strong personalities like Atom™.
