R-A-G ‎- Dreadfully Nervous

  • Don't let the "deep" in MOS Deep fool you, because this series is all about weapons. The latest is from R-A-G, the acid-loving trio of Gijs Poortman, MarcoAntonio Spaventi and MOS's founder, Aroy Dee. Dreadfully Nervous, the most recent in a string of effective 12-inches from the Amsterdam outfit, has more character than most of the 303 workouts released these days. Everyone's attention will be on "Dreadfully (Stoned Version)." Dark and dubby, it's little more than an arpeggitated synth and occasional licks of acid atop a faint 4/4 pulse, capped off by heavily treated vocals—inspired by an Edgar Allan Poe story—from Aroy Dee. It's easy imagine it melting the dance floor five hours into a Marcel Dettmann set, but there's one problem: it's only three minutes long. You won't have any trouble playing the more conventional "Dreadfully Nervous (Aryd's Acid Mix)" or "No Soul (Shallow String Mix)." These are straight-up acid bangers, with growling basslines and jacking drums. The brighter "Acid Mix" is streamlined but hits hard, while the "Shallow String Mix" caves in with a barrage of cymbals, claps and 303s halfway through. Fiendish vocals give both tracks an extra splash of colour.
