SW. / SVN - Untitled

  • Untitled, by SW. and SVN, is unusually direct for a SUED record. The A-side's tender chord melodies, hearty kicks and fathoms-deep basslines sound like those on some lost deep house classic. The insistent synth pulses and 4/4 drums on the B-side seem designed for the tail-end of a party. Though the label's cofounders are known for styles that might play off one another—SW.'s cuts tend to be dancier, and SVN, often in collaboration with others, is more offbeat—they steer towards SW.'s vibe on Untitled. Both sides have features that might seem at odds. The tracks have a soup-like density, but their details are crunchy. The drums and chords of the A-side, for example, are swollen, yet the tambourines and closed hi-hats remain dry. The B-side's heat-hazed synth melody soaks the track in the same way, as percussion swishes above the waterline, like legs that idle on the edge of a swimming pool. The mood of this 12-inch, however, is uncomplicated. The B-side, while not quite euphoric, is as giddy as SUED records get. A bittersweet air prevails on the excellent A-side, which would've sounded at home on SW.'s LP of last year.
