Lolina - Lolita

  • Two tracks on Lolita, the latest EP from Lolina, AKA Inga Copeland, namecheck mundane features of large cities—busy roads, cash and carries. But, as usual, there's more going on under the surface. Over "Lolita""s staccato, grime-inspired keyboard lead, Copeland sings of running a red light, which later seems like a metaphor for a man's relationship with an underage girl: "You call her baby girl, well, guess what she thinks of that / And in your prison, forever / You hear her voice more than ever!" It's the latest sleight-of-hand from an artist whose music is routinely illusory. "Keep It Movin'" describes the circulation of money with a mixture of casual wordplay ("Cash and carry on"), repurposed clichés ("I put it where my mouth is") and vignettes that allude to a musician's livelihood, most likely hers. "It's a simple transaction," Copeland sings, but by now we know better. Humour and paranoia work in tandem. Underneath the title track's creeping melody, irregular percussive sounds—clicks and crunches that resemble clock ticks and car keys—gesture to the story. "Keep It Movin'"'s sprightly bass pulse contrasts with the track's trudging four-note chords, which suggest some repetitive labour. "Plot Twist"'s wobbling surges of noise—they sound like zips being pulled up too quickly—edge Lolita closer to its dance music muse. The track's nervy blend of UK club sounds is, as you'd expect, imaginative and slippery.
