HOLOVR - Likemind 05

  • Likemind has a small discography and a big reputation. Active between 1993 and 1996, the UK label had an eclectic sound that focused on the ethereal side of techno, IDM and electro. Among collectors, Likemind is probably most famous for showcasing the work of Nuron, a talented but elusive producer who disappeared as unceremoniously as the label did. (Nuron apparently became a race car driver in Malaysia.) Likemind has the tapped London artist Jimmy Billingham, better known HOLOVR, for its first record in 21 years. Billingham's ambient-tinged approach is perfect for Likemind, delivering an EP that slots in with the label's mid-'90s peak. When pads swell to life on "Split Infinity," it's like being transported back in time. Billingham works up an IDM sound bath with springy drums, exhaling synths, twinkling arpeggios and a honeyed vocal sample. The only sign of 2017 is the track's crystal-clear sound. Like Nuron's best work, it's rhythmic but curiously static, the drums floating rather than pushing. "Hillraiser" is equally light. The kicks might be heavier, but they keep the track afloat while pads and arpeggios bloom and recede in dazzling configurations. Likemind 05 is undeniably retro, but it feels genuine. Billingham has modernized the label's sound while keeping its distinct air intact.
