Charlotte Bendiks - Hidden Tracks

  • Fun is an undervalued commodity in the serious business of modern dance music, but it's always been present in the Cómeme universe. Its press releases weave fanciful stories, while slamming percussion, tailormade for sloppily drunken dance floors, is a hallmark of the Cómeme sound. The label's latest recruit, Tromsø's Charlotte Bendiks, is, judging by her debut EP, well schooled in the Cómeme way. It's easy to hear why Bendiks landed on the label when you listen to her earlier releases for Mental Overdrive's Love OD Communications. The six productions on Hidden Tracks explore similar ideas, but they feel more developed and confident. Bendiks has moved on from Tromsø sound she was raised on, trading it for a tougher approach delivered with a sly wink. There's an infectious, reckless abandon to the thickset jackbeat of the Boska collaboration, "Tellstainnj," and the marauding Norse kwaito of "Moped Jacks." The vocal version of the gleeful ghetto house throwback "Noir" really hits the spot, as Bendiks conjures a sublimely grubby bassline to anchor the snapping percussion. Hidden Tracks might not be the most original release, but it shows Bendiks to be a versatile producer who doesn't take herself too seriously.
