Glowing Palms - Kiki / Asteroidz

  • Blip Discs specializes in drums. From tribal workouts to hand-percussion blitzes, the label packs every inch of its tracks with beats, which lends it a style like few others in the London scene. But an overarching sense of oddness doesn't detract from danceability—its tracks are made for DJ sets. Blip Discs' fifth release, from Rüf Kutz associate Glowing Palms, is its strangest yet, trading tribalism for a mischievous bounce and an '80s neon glimmer. "Kiki" is a great example of Blip Discs' inventive approach. Neither old school or particularly modern, it feels slower than it should be as it cruises on an amen break and a squeaky lead. It feels more big room than usual for Blip Discs, with a sense of humour, filter sweeps and gear shifts to keep you on your toes—it would stand out in any set. "Asteroidz" isn't as strong, but it's equally cheeky with a hummable melody that sounds like hardcore in slow motion. There are also little acid flare-ups near the end. Glowing Palms fits Blip Discs' outsider streak, but as Kiki / Asteroidz proves, "outsider" doesn't have to mean outside the dance floor.
