Baaz ‎- The Reason

  • A crafty bassline can turn an otherwise mellow deep house track into a bomb. It's something Barbara Preisinger, who runs Slices Of Life, would known full well after two decades behind the decks in German clubs. Take "Ancestors Fun," the B-side of Baaz's latest 12-inch on her label. It has plenty of deep house's hallmarks—pads, shuffling percussion, diva vocal snippets, twinkling synths—but with an added extra: a massive low-end. It might be too complex for clubbers still feeling out the dance floor early in the night, but it sounds just right for those blurry moments when the first rays of sunlight start creeping under a club's doors. If "Ancestors Fun" is the EP's afterhours trip, then "The Reason" is the warm-up groover. It's more atmospheric than its punchier companion, but it also packs plenty of character into a reduced framework. The chugging drums are soft and straightforward, laying the groundwork for a smooth trip that includes panning vocals, the occasional clanging piano and another killer bassline. Warm with a psychedelic touch, it's one more classy tune from an expert in deep sounds.
