- The third release from newcomer label Big Square is a label sampler featuring tracks from three of their own artists, Lunamoth, Merka and Screen3 with a massive remix done by En:vision label boss Future Funk Squad and keeing true to Big Square's vision of creating breakbeat tunes that lean slightly left of centre.
Side A. Lunamoth - Squirrels... Yeah! (Future Funk Squad's Bring Back the Red Squirrel Mix)
FFS' remix retains all that we love from his sound - stabby pads, sharp snares and really short hi-hats and he takes the quirky Squirrel's and moulds it with his signature style stamped all over it. A dark menacing bass line gives the feeling of an evil presence but is all turned upside down with the techy hook and wacky vocal samples cut through it.
Side B1. Merka - Line Dread
Line Dread opens up with a breakbeat reminiscent of early 90's style breaks and introduces a heavily squelching bass line to the mix incorporating plenty of breakdowns and drum fills for variation. This ones more on a garage tip but it gets a bit repetitive - definitely one tune to slam a vocal on top.
Side B2. Screen3 - Fudge Rub
The final tune on this release features a spongey bassline, low profile drum beats with a jazz influence that can be heard throughout, a quirky keyboard riff and a vocal sample that gets played and chopped up throughout. During the breakdown the bass line changes into a different melody yet still retains a certain quirkiness about it.
Big Square offers something new here in the realm of breakbeat but only really hammers it with the Future Funk Squad remix of Squirrels... Yeah!
