Sami%SuYung - Ethics EP

  • Sami%SuYung is the production alias of the recently married couple Sami Yenigun and Joyce Lim. Alongside Dawit Eklund, they run the exciting DC label 1432 R. There's a vibrant harmony beaming through Ethics, the couple's first EP together. This creative rapport wasn't always there—in a recent Truants interview, the pair said they had been struggling to make music together for years. They clicked during a two-week period after they married, which resulted in the four tracks on Ethics. Whirlwind is a good word to describe Ethics. The tunes begin with functional intros but don't sit still for long. None reach the six-minute mark but they cover lots of ground. "Free Time" has an unrelenting maelstrom of synthetic flourishes that could make Floating Points blush. They fizzle like particles in the Large Hadron Collider. The buccaneering "Do It Up" seems to take inspiration from Max D, a local DC hero. It's pitched between the crazed rhythms of his Dolo Percussion project and the glistening optimism of his debut LP, Cool Water. Best of all, however, is "Light Touch." The skittering, jackhammer-style drums are complemented by a naive melody that conjures up childhood memories of the Rugrats theme.
