D.O.K. - Efed Up EP

  • Ten years ago, the grime crew and label Aftershock released Shock To The System, a seminal album that featured vocals from from Wiley and D Double E alongside Aftershock crew members Bruza, Tinie Tempah and Mz Bratt. Terror Danjah and D.O.K. handled much of the album's production, which Danjah would later give away for free. (Some of the tracks can also be found on his Lost Voices LP.) What made Shock To The System seminal was its variety, a trait that still permeates Terror Danjah and D.O.K.'s output. Efed Up is D.O.K.'s second EP for Terror Danjah's Hardrive label. Like 2016's Grove, Efed Up is nefariously good fun. "Killa Clart" is a vehement response to Danjah's "Saturn" that features strings and finicky beats. "Funky" does what it says on the tin, with an intro of trumpets, steel pan hits and keys giving way to a fat bass skank. The vibe deepens on the grungy dancehall-riffing "Tempo Riddim," while "Efed Up" weds a smouldering female vocal with shiny metal percussion and minimalist bass. This concoction's simplicity makes it lethal.
