Marc Philipp & Nils Weimann - Mupasario

  • Mupasario, like Marc Philipp and Nils Weimann's previous collaborations, isn't exactly flashy. Like other artists tenuously associated with outdated terms like "minimal house," there's a confidence and restraint here that can cut both ways—one person's impeccably structured bomb is like watching paint dry to another. But beyond subjective points of taste and generic definition, Mupasario is obviously pleasing. A big part of this lies in its basslines, which on the title track and "Yabda" are of sure-shot quality. The structures, too, have a considered pace that reflects a studied awareness of controlling energy levels in the dance. "Mupasario" is positively jaunty with its slinking swing and dead-simple bassline, stomping along emphatically. But it's the little things that count: the contrast between occasional syncopations in the kick drum and the hi-hat pattern, different types of FX shadowing the snare, the brittle bits of harmonic content deployed here and there. The extended intro's mood is so buoyant that it's almost surprising to hear a decidedly dour pad line in the middle. It's a similar story on "Yabda." The bassline wriggles steadily into view around a broken beat kick and the occasional jaunty tom fill, which incongruously sound like something out of a Phil Collins single. "Philippu & Nilesh" sounds like the soundtrack to an especially hazy afterhours. It's a tough context in which to place a short downtempo number without it feeling superfluous, but it's not bereft of charm.
