Futureshock at CheekyPeople, London 14-05-04

  • The duo was back in London last Friday at The Soundshaft in their Dex N’ Fx apparel (seems to be the new buzz word on the dance scene). The focus then is clearly on Futureshock’s own productions using sampler and Fx unit as well as the classics 1210’s and Pioneer CDJ. This allows the band to propose truly original versions of their tunes and perform everything on the fly…Hum…exiting! I got to the club after 12 and found with delight that there was no queue! Wicked, I bet the club is already packed and well warmed up by the Dpressure djs. Well, not exactly. There was no queue outside and there was nobody inside! Literally about 100 people at the most. Oh that’s not good…. maybe everyone will just rush inside around 1am? Come 1am and yes there is definitely more people in, at least 102 now. It must have come as a bit of a shock for Futureshock (!) now used to play in front of thousands of exited clubbers. In this club, there was an ‘end of house party’ type of feeling, when it’s 5am and everyone’s gone apart from the few hardcore that could dance to pretty much anything. The guys’ performance was pretty cool though although not fantastic but who can blame them for not lifting up our minds in such a poor atmosphere? They stripped out almost all vocals from the tracks on their last LP and served us a pretty techy set. The few people I talked to after the gig were disappointed as they were expecting a more uplifting set with all Futureshock’s classic remixes and productions but then it was one of this night when nothing seems to work out… Still summer is almost there and I am sure we will see Futureshock again very soon with hopefully for them the support they deserve.
