wants - Icntu EP

  • Polish producers Marcin Krupa and Kacper Peresada have been working on their music as wants since 2014, when they released two dirty, bass-heavy house tracks on London's Fat! Records. Obviously influenced by UK club trends, the duo's subsequent EPs have dabbled in garage, dubstep and techno, always closely mirroring their sources rather than offering a distinct progression. Now working with Jakwob's Boom Ting Recordings, wants have moved on to a style more in line with the likes of Livity Sound, Hessle Audio and Swamp 81. But the duo's four-track Icntu EP doesn't take an experimental approach to dance music, preferring to hit the well-trodden nexus of UK bass and techno right on the nose. wants at least hit it hard. Where this EP skimps on surprise it gorges on force. "Something Out" has a convincingly punchy groove, with robust kicks and delicate percussion, and the blown-out throbs that carry "Alpaca" are compelling no matter what tracks they bring to mind. Maybe if it was a bit more angular and agile, "Oppdal," with its heaving low-end, would be dangerous. Krupa and Peresada's ideas aren't presented with much flair, but if a booming track like "Randoms" is put on at the right time and place, it'll tenaciously hold its own.
