Michael Boothman - Touch

  • In just a few years, the Toronto duo behind Invisible City Editions have developed a Midas touch. Much like DJ Harvey, word that ICE dropped a certain record in their sets can get them added to hundreds of Discogs wantlists overnight. In pulling out all manner of electric zouk, soca, kwaito, Portuguese new wave, South African house and West Indies fare for their sets, they've turned such discoveries into a web shop with astonishing and pricy singles from around the world. Thankfully, ICE have used their own imprint to bring some of these rare singles into wider circulation. Trinidadian guitarist Michael Boothman is one of their first reclamation projects. While Boothman was at one point a labelmate of S.O.S. Band and Cherrelle, doing sleek soul, ICE dug up two tricky jazz-funk songs here. Originally credited to vocalist Charmaine Forde, whose voice is somewhere between Chaka Khan and Sylvia Striplin, "Waiting For Your Love" transcends its rare groove into something more noteworthy, thanks to some tricky guitar work from Boothman (as well as extra hand percussion). But this record's highlight is the stunning, 11-minute version of "What You Won't Do For Love." Originally a slow-burner from Bobby Caldwell, Boothman picks up the pace so the song percolates like a bottle of Solo soda. Forde's voice is sweet and sultry, and Boothman adds a whisper and a cosmic synth line that makes its expansive runtime seem almost too short. Naturally, it was DJ Harvey's go-to set closer on his last European tour.
