Unknown Artist - Ghosts / Spirits

  • Between 2012 and 2014, the Booma Collective was a tight-knit clan based in Montréal. Affectionately named The Furnace, the magic happened in a laundry room in an apartment shared by some of the members. Some of that music has been released by the crew's eponymous label, most recently as a two-part 12-inch compilation called The Furnace Series. Nowadays, the Booma Collective is scattered around the globe: Solpara and Oren Ratowsky reside in the US, others have settled down in Europe. But every now and again, that old community spirit is conjured. Ghosts / Spirits, a four-tracker from an unnamed Booma artist, embodies everything the collective was about. It's mysterious yet engaging, both functional and experimental, making for dark, dreamy and seductive music. And each track is rattled and agitated, as if rudely awoken after centuries of solace. Dubbed-out and lethargic, "Ghost 2" is still coming around—it's thorniness is just an outer-shell protecting a fragile core. On "Ghost 4," an operatic female voice wails over sombre techno, making us wonder exactly what's happening here. A spooky ambience permeates the rest of the EP, but nothing quite as haunting as the first apparition.
