DJC - Club Constructions Vol. 7

  • DJC, who is responsible for the latest installment of Night Slugs' Club Constructions series, doesn't have so much as a SoundCloud profile. Going on three years since Jam City's Vol. 6, Vol. 7 features four tracks in the raw and stripped-down style outlined by the Club Constructions manifesto but with an unexpected twist—they're basically hip-hop instrumentals, rough around the edges and slightly experimental. DJC's recent Rinse FM appearance frames the artist's approach. He or she mixed the likes of E-40, Clipse and Nicki Minaj alongside original work, and some of the blends were almost imperceptible. Featuring prominent melodic elements and a big sample bank, "Capricorn" and "Native" test the limits of Night Slugs' criteria for Club Constructions with fantastic results. The former is a head-knocking banger that boasts a slimy earworm of a bassline, while the latter borders on grime thanks to skeletal drum work and unhinged FX. "CC101" and "CC102" stick closer to the rules, sounding as if they were banged straight out of a drum machine minutes ago, and are no less powerful for it. With an ear for the Night Slugs purview and a command of nasty production ideas, DJC won't likely be a secret much longer.
