- Under the name Catch, London's Jules Venturini has appeared on a couple 12-inches with recent Perc Trax signing Ansome. His debut under his own name, which launches a label from Warsaw promoters Brutaż, steers away from roughshod techno towards more tender moods. Its tracks still have plenty of weight behind them, but their blows are cushioned by swathes of weepy melody. Introspection, it turns out, suits Venturini well.
The EP's two low-tempo dance floor tracks push far into the red, and the resulting crust of distortion gives them a sense of huge, fuzzy mass. "No Reference" is darker, with brittle snares skidding across its oil-black surface. Things brighten up for the wonderful "Selectors Roll," which really takes off when a frazzled bassline pings into view about two minutes in. When it floats away six minutes later, you're not quite ready for it to go.
Rounding out the EP is the drum-less "Nothing Ever Changes," which loops the titular phrase over a jittery synth bed. The sentiment seems bleak at first, but when weathered chords enter in the second half, you start to wonder if that's not such a bad thing after all.
