Mert Yucel – Microwave EP

  • For the last 2 years, Mert Yucel has been quite busy with releases on Choo Choo and Baroque, releases that have seen strong support from the likes of the tribal masters such as Steve Lawler and Danny Tenaglia. The Turkish based producer is at it yet again, this time on Nascent Recordings, with his Microwave EP. Funky Ride is on the a-side, and it is quite a chunky house affair, with a very strong baseline that rumbles its way through. The drums, as usual from Mert, are very solid and they keep the production moving along nicely, as do some nice subtle pads that do their job nicely as well as a simple enough vocal line. Solid throughout without ever really shining, it is easy to see why the likes of Lawler would eat this up. Twisted is on the flip, and the chunky ness returns again with some big drums combined with a rumbling, but not too empowering baseline doing the trick this time. Made for a mid set slot, this track yet again showcases Mert’s chunky, yet quite minimal tribal approach. Not a bad release by any stretch but not a release that will remain in the memories of any DJ’s record box. Worth a listen though!
