DJ Sprinkles in LA

  • Golden Box is tucked away from the grimy, neon-lit sidewalks of LA's Hollywood Boulevard. Its line forms in a dimly lit corner of an unassuming parking lot, just beyond a food truck. The space inside is intimate, with exposed brick and graffiti on all sides. At one end of the dance floor is the DJ booth, which, true to the club's name, is an actual golden box. In the short time they've been working together, promoters Alison Swing and Masha Martinovic have been throwing well-curated parties under the Dig Deeper banner. They've brought artists like The Black Madonna and Axel Boman to LA, and on October 29th they continued their run of form by securing DJ Sprinkles, AKA Terre Thaemlitz, for one of two US dates. Thaemlitz opened the night and closed it out. She was there from the moment you walked in, no more than 50 feet away and already deep into her flow. The vibe inside was lively from the start. People of all types pulsed about the dance floor and in line for the bathroom and the bar. It was easy to revel in Thaemlitz's smooth, punchy selections. From start to finish the music was phenomenal. Thaemlitz got an especially warm reaction when she played "Grand Central, Pt 1 (Deep In the Bowel of House)" off of 2009's Midtown 120 Blues. Towards the end of her second set, she played a wild piano jam with a chorus of tribal drums. So many hands flailed upwards in response—a couple embraced in a corner, while friends laughed together, swinging their hips back and forth. When the party eventually wound down around 2 AM, it was clear that neither the crowd nor the DJ were ready to call it a night. If anything, DJ Sprinkles was just getting started.
