Ajukaja & Andrevski - LEVELS-004

  • Ajukaja & Andrevski are hardly new kids on the block. Ajukaja, in particular, has a large discography to his name, including collaborations with fellow Estonian Maria Minerva. But the pair reached a new audience through their recent hook-up with London's LEVELS. Their 2014 single for the label, Rare Birds, made like its title: its synths twittered and chirped like an electrified dawn chorus, sounding quite unlike other hardware house efforts of the time. This followup is just as distinctive, though on "Looking For Something That's Not There," those bright melodies sound more like glow-worms wriggling about on the seabed. The chords are ambrosial, the house pulse gentle but tireless. Not much happens over its seven-minute duration, but not much needs to. Over on the B-side, "Mesilind" is more full-blooded, and not quite so convincing. There are echoes of New York in its robust groove and soulful chords, but once again the synths—daubs of melody that almost sound like processed voices, 'Windowlicker'-style—remind us that Ajukaja & Andrevski live in their own strange world.
