Fit Siegel - Carmine

  • Aaron "Fit" Siegel's output since his 2012 FXHE debut, Tonite, has been sporadic, but those who follow his music closely might understand why. Carmine is his second release on the label arm of the long-running Detroit distributor that shares his nickname, and, like everything he's produced, it's crafted with an uncommon wit and musicality. You can tell a lot of work went into "First Found." Its bleepy, ice-encased loop is preceded by a jumble of grand piano keys that search for form, stumbling in the dark before hitting the light switch. A "hey" eventually inserts itself between the call-and-response melodies, amplifying the track's driving pulse with the lightest of touches. "Carmine" is just as graceful. Its plaintive strings are more traditionally Detroit techno than most of Siegel's music, but the track's weeping 303 and icy melody root it firmly in the present.
