FD - Change Please

  • There's an art to working with a good vocal sample in dance music, particularly one that hasn't been beaten to death over the years by producers with the same ideas. London artist Freddie Dixon makes it sound simple on his first 12-inch for Spearhead Records, delivering two drum & bass rollers with catchy vocals that stick in the mind without being overbearing. "Change Please" is one of those irresistible drum & bass tunes that, in the grand tradition of Calibre, feels like it's skating on ice. Fuzzy chords nudge it forward while the carefully pitch-shifted vocal wafts through like puffs of smoke. It's hard to say exactly what makes "Change Please" so good, but it's lovely to listen to. The same goes for "Into You," a tranquilized banger with slowed-down basslines and distant delay chords. Both tracks are career highs for FD, and they show that you don't have to rip up the rulebook to make inspiring dance music.
