  • Not too serious from Da Lata, thankfully, and if you've been following Chris Franck and Patrick Forge's project you'll know it majors on a Brazilian theme. 'Serious' finds them pushing the boundaries to include soul, broken beat and some more improvised sounds, awash with colour and vitality. A whole roster of guest vocalists are included, with Jhelisa adding to the brilliantly edgy rhythm of Reeling. Not only vocalists but accordion player Macelo Feneci da Silva is also present on 'Something' and the title track, a funked-up number betraying a myriad of influences. As well as Jhelisa, the vocalists, all meriting a mention, are Baaba Maal, Nina Miranda, Courtney Denni, Bembe Segue, Mamamai Keita and Pedro Martins. Quite a cast list when you consider the whole record is over within forty minutes, but then that's often what a good dance album lacks - the foresight to know it's quality rather than quantity! Da Lata's colourful style, less predictable than ever and nowhere near a pigeon hole, is well worth seeking out and ensures their continual demand as remixers.
