Jean Nipon - Nice Seeing You EP

  • Until now, Parisian producer Jean-Baptiste Bressy has dealt in fidgety bangers and stripped-down bass music. As a result, the abstract house of Nice Seeing You is a departure for both him and his hometown label ClekClekBoom. That said, there's a freshness, a palpable joie de vivre about his latest EP as Jean Nipon that's in keeping with the buzz surrounding ClekClekBoom and Paris itself right now. The four tracks here are raw to the point of almost sounding like unfinished sketches. This is particularly true of "Eerie II," which drifts into view through a fog of gauzy beats and muted clanks and crashes. The low cloud that cloaks the opener persists on "Daydream Nation," although after arriving on a bed of rough kicks, shards of sunlight begin to peak through in the shape of sweet synth melodies. The frazzled "I Owe You So Much" lurches towards old-school electro, but far more interesting is "Up North." Ratcheting up the pressure with a resolute tom-tom pattern and staccato hi-hats that sound like they've had bits trimmed off them, its quirky steel drums may seem like an oddity, but they'll be lapped up by open-minded crowds.
